Shockwave Therapy – a gamechanger for Plantar Fasciitis, Ankle, Elbow, and Shoulder Pain

We have been providing Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) at the Romsey Chiropractic Clinic for a number of years now, and have seen great success and patient satisfaction. Alex Dimopoulos DC completed his training in 2018 and has been a member of the British Shockwave Association since 2019.
The therapy has emerged as a highly effective treatment for a range of stubborn tendon and connective tissue complaints, including plantar fasciitis, ankle, knee, elbow, and shoulder pain. This well researched, non-invasive treatment uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues, to improve tendon glide, reduce inflammation, and promote natural recovery.
- Plantar Fasciitis: Severe pain under the heel that is usually worse in the mornings, improves marginally with activity, but stubbornly persists for many months. Shockwave therapy targets the fascia (tissue on the sole of the foot), helping to break down long standing adhesions, promoting faster healing and reducing chronic pain. Many patients experience significant relief after just 3 to 4 sessions.
- Ankle Pain: Whether due to sprains, tendonitis, or arthritis, connective tissue adhesions and scar tissue may be slowing your recovery. Shockwave therapy helps to break these down, improving blood flow and accelerating the healing process, improving mobility and reducing discomfort.
- Elbow Pain (Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow): Persistent pain at either the outer or inner elbow, that is usually worse with certain activities or movements, and that may progress to be constantly painful. Usually the result of repetitive activities or incorrect movement patterns both at work / sport. Shockwave therapy breaks down calcium deposits, stimulates nerve endings, and aids tissue regeneration in the elbow, helping to alleviate pain and improve function.
- Shoulder Pain: For conditions like rotator cuff injuries or shoulder tendinitis, shockwave therapy provides relief by improving circulation and encouraging the repair of chronically damaged muscle and tendon tissues.
Shockwave therapy is available at the Romsey Chiropractic Clinic, where each case is assessed on an individual basis with comprehensive examination to exclude contraindications whilst assessing for suitability for the treatment. In the majority of cases, manual therapy coupled with exercises prescription and activity modification advice is included with the treatment, which we find adds great value.
We use the Swiss DolorClast® Mastertouch, supplied by CT Medical. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database, abbreviated PEDro, is a bibliographic database containing randomized trials, clinical practice guidelines, and systematic reviews in physical therapy. In 80% of the studies for shockwave therapy, the Swiss DolorClast® resulted in better clinical outcomes than the control group. Check the research here: https://www.ems-dolorclast.com/success-stories/superior-performance-ems-dolorclast-radial-shock-waves
A recent clinic audit of shockwave therapy patients demonstrated that over 80% of cases report very good improvement over a course of 3 to 5 sessions, with less than 10% requiring onward referral for further investigation.
